Our review on Co op car insurance policy

Co-op Insurance was formed in 1867 to provide cover for co-operative societies and it offers two insurance policies:

  • standard cover that is available for customers aged 17 to 75 (3 stars by Defaqto); and
  • Young Driver insurance for those aged 17 to 24 which uses the black box technology (3 stars by Defaqto).

Both insurance policies only include the comprehensive cover which is not among the highest cover on the market as you will get as standard:

  • courtesy car
  • 8 days european cover
  • £750 keys cover.

However, you can tailor your policy adding extras such as breakdown cover, enhanced courtesy car cover, up to 90 days coverage abroad etc. You can also get up to 70% NCB discount within 5 years without a claim as well as 10% off your first premium when buying online. The insurance company however has a review of 1.6/5 on TrustPilot which is lower than the average review. A lot of complaints were made about the time it took to resolve queries on the website. Apart from this, there is no self service option. All these factors reduce the overall performance of the insurance company.

Breakdown cover at Co op

Co-op Insurance collaborated with AXA Assistance (UK) Ltd to provide a comprehensive breakdown cover. The breakdown cover offers the following services as standard:

  • full UK and european cover including home assistance
  • swift response in the event of a breakdown. A fee of £20 is paid in the case that there is a delay in response
  • roadside assistance.

Keycare cover at Co op

An amount of £750 is provided for the keycare cover and this is only enforced in the case of theft and if it has been ascertained that the person in possession of the keys knows where the car is and can easily steal it.

Windscreen cover at Co op

Co-op provides £75 for in the event that the windscreen would need replacement, and £15 for windscreen repair

Motor legal protection at Co op

The Motor Legal Protection provided by Co-op offers up to £100,000 of cover for uninsured losses if you’re involved in a motor accident that is not your fault. This amount covers:

  • access to legal counsel
  • 24/7 legal helpline
  • cover for the driver and any named driver on the insurance policy.

Personal policy injury available at Co op

In the case of an accident, and also in the event that within 12 months, the injuries sustained from this accident leads to:

Coverage abroad at Co op

Co-op provides European cover for only 8 days in any policy year. If extra time is needed, an extended foreign use cover which allows the driver to travel for up to 90 days on each trip is provided.

  • if the driver has a functional driver’s license and is below the age of 86.

The no claims bonus is not affected if you’ve claimed for windscreen damage.

At Co op, you can apply for the NCB protection. The NCB protection allows you to make a certain number of claims within a period without losing your No-Claim bonus.

A No-Claim bonus is a reward that you get from driving during a long time (at least one year) without making any claim. The more years you drive without claims, the higher your NCB rate gets hence the higher the discount on your insurance premium.

Co op black-box insurance

The Black Box option that Co-op offers is attached to the Young Driver’s insurance cover and it is more or less a way to promote safe driving. When this insurance plan is activated, a small black box is fitted in the car and it measures data such as car speed, acceleration and breaking, frequency of trips and so on. The following offers are linked to this option:

  • rac breakdown cover which is optional
  • motor legal protection (this is optional)
  • discounts (discounts are offered on the insurance policy depending on how safe the driver is driving

With Co-op, no quote or insurance policy is put in place for cars that are more than 30 years old.

Co op short term cover

Temporary car insurance is perfect for drivers that are only planning to drive for a very short period of time. It basically provides a short term insurance which usually lasts between one hour and 28 days in the case of an accident, damage or theft. This can be added to an insurance policy up to 3 times in a year as long as the number of days does not exceed 42.

How to cancel your car insurance at Co op?

You can always cancel your car insurance policy at any time. However, some fees may apply especially if you cancel it after the 14 cooling-off period after your contract's anniversary date.

Since car insurance is a legal requirement, Co op as well as other insurers will renew your policy automatically at the end of the policy period without any notification from your side. However, Co op has the obligation to send you a renewal notice within 7 to 21 days before your contract comes to an end. You will therefore have 14 days - the cooling off period - to cancel your policy at reduced cancellation fees.

For the same reason, if you cancel your car insurance policy, you must sign up to a new one immediately. Find out more on car insurance legal requirement.

You would need to have various documents ready such as:

  • your policy number (right hand corner of your documents);
  • your bank details; and
  • your payment method in case there are cancellation fees.

Co op could also refuse to cover your car any longer if you don't pay for your premiums within the time allocated, or if they find out that you omitted important information that was required by the company such as your driving experience or you if have committed a fraud of any kind. This act is known as ‘fronting’.
