The Post Office Money is a car insurance specialist for over 50. The company has two major insurance policies: The Over 50s (5 stars) and Under 50s (3 stars). Each of those policies includes a comprehensive, a Third party and a Third party, fire and theft cover.

The Comprehensive cover offers the following:

The breakdown cover is provided by RAC Motoring Services and for the under 50s the first year is free, the breakdown cover is included in the insurance policy however for the over 50s service, it can be added as an optional extra.

Keycare cover at Post Office

The Keycare Cover is provided by Ageas Insurance Limited and can be added to a policy as an optional extra. The following are provided with this cover:

  • £1,000 cover every year for the replacement of lost or stolen keys
  • £40 per day for car hire for a maximum of 3 days.

Windscreen cover at Post Office

Windscreen replacement and repairs is free when the driver contacts the glass helpline and an approved repairer is used.

Motor legal protection at Post Office

Post Office provides Motor Legal Protection as an optional extra and the following are included in this option:

  • £100,000 of legal expenses to help recover uninsured losses
  • claim for compensation in the case that the accident damaged your car beyond repair or use

In the case of an accident, Post office offers the victim a sum and also provides cover for medical expenses up to £200. This is however only available on the comprehensive cover for both the over 50s and under 50s insurance policies.

Abroad coverage is available under the comprehensive insurance policy and this coverage allows the holders to travel through Europe for about 60 days. The list of countries includes:

How to cancel your car insurance at Post Office?

You can always cancel your car insurance policy at any time. However, some fees may apply especially if you cancel it after the 14 cooling-off period after your contract's anniversary date.

Since car insurance is a legal requirement, Post Office as well as other insurers will renew your policy automatically at the end of the policy period without any notification from your side. However, Post Office has the obligation to send you a renewal notice within 7 to 21 days before your contract comes to an end. You will therefore have 14 days - the cooling off period - to cancel your policy at reduced cancellation fees.

For the same reason, if you cancel your car insurance policy, you must sign up to a new one immediately. Find out more on car insurance legal requirement.

You would need to have various documents ready such as:

  • your policy number (right hand corner of your documents);
  • your bank details; and
  • your payment method in case there are cancellation fees.

Post Office could also refuse to cover your car any longer if you don't pay for your premiums within the time allocated, or if they find out that you omitted important information that was required by the company such as your driving experience or you if have committed a fraud of any kind. This act is known as ‘fronting’.
