Any UK citizen is eligible to claim Child Benefit when bringing up a child who is under the age of 16 - limit that goes up to 20 if the child still remains in education or training.

When does Child Benefit stop?

You will receive Child Benefit if:

  • Your child is under 16
  • Your child is between 16 and 20, and is into education or training.

There exist many exceptions which depend on the status of the parents and of the child. You should carefully check on the UK government website.

How much is Child Benefit?

The government has basically defined two Child Benefit rates:

  • For the eldest son or a unique child : a £21.05 per week Child Benefit rate
  • For any additional children : a £13.95 per week Child Benefit rate.

Good to know

If you are your partner earns more than £50,000 per year, you may be subject to reimburse some of your Child Benefit in taxes.

When is Child Benefit paid?

The Child Benefice Office pays the Child Benefit to the UK eligible citizens every 4 weeks, on Mondays or Tuesdays. For the most vulnerable people (single parents or people receiving the Income Support), it is possible to receive the Child Benefit on a weekly basis.
