What is SP50?

An SP50 fine or SP30 fine can vary from £100 if you pay the fixed penalty up to £2,500, while SP30 points can vary from 3 to 6 – in exceptional circumstances a magistrate can even order a driving ban.

What is SP30?

SP30 is the code used for speeding offence committed on any road that isn’t a motorway.

So if you’re doing 40 in a 30 zone, it’s an SP30 offence – so is doing 94 mph on a dual carriageway.

However, while there’s only one SP30 code, there are different levels of seriousness. And if the case goes to court, magistrates have discretion to impose a wide variety of fines. So if you want to know, for instance, how much is a speeding fine for doing 40 in a 30 zone, the answer is not simple. The one thing you do know, though, is that unless the police decide to offer you a second chance by sending you on a speed awareness course, you’ll get points on your licence.

The DVLA points code will be shown on your online DVLA record along with the number of penalty points.

How does speeding offence work?

Under speeding offence, we’ve shown two levels of fine;

  1. The fixed penalty fine which can be paid within 28 days (fixed penalty notice) of being notified of the offence by letter (for instance if you were caught by a speed camera) or on-the-spot if stopped by a police officer.
  2. If the case goes to court, the fine could be much larger. It’s usually based on a percentage of your weekly income, with the limits shown.

Can I avoid getting fined for speeding?

If you are luck, you can be invited to follow a speed awareness course instead of paying a fine and getting points on your licence.

Speed awareness courses are offered to drivers who have been caught speeding, as an alternative to being fined and having their licences endorsed.

It is designed for drivers who have committed minor speeding offences and who might benefit from a higher level of awareness and understanding of how speed affects the safety of their driving.

Good to know

You will still need to pay for your speed awareness course around £85 - £100.

Can a speeding offence affect my insurance premium?

Of course yes. As any other motoring offence (such as your car not being insured, tax, or any claim made on your motor insurance), getting caught speeding will have an impact on your car insurance premium.

If you've been caught speeding, you are considered as a higher risk driver, not respecting road traffic regulations.

You may find fewer insurers want your business. You’ll pay more than a driver without convictions. But you will still be able to get insurance.

How long will penalty points for speeding stay on my licence?

Motoring convictions have an expiry date. Most common offences, including speeding, stay on your licence for four years. Once they have finally been taken off your licence, you no longer have to disclose the offence to insurers.

However, drink and drug driving offences and causing death by careless driving stay on your licence for 11 years.

You can check points on a licence at www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence. It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to check your driving licence points, or if you’re lucky, the absence of points!

How do speed cameras work in the UK?

Speed cameras in the UK can record your speed bu using small detectors either on the road surface or on a radar technology. The speed camera will record:

  • your speed
  • your reg plate
  • the exact date and time of the offence
  • the detailed location
  • the speed limit of the road etc.

Most speed cameras in the UK have a tolerance of 10% + 2mph. So for instance, if the limit is 70 mph on a motorway, a 79 mph speed will still be ok.

Watch out!

Never forget mobile speed cameras too!
