What is a R40 tax form?

The official R40 form is a document issued by the HM Revenues & Customs (HMRC) through which any UK citizen can claim repayment of tax paid on investments or interests made on savings. You have to use the R40 online tax form when you do not have completed a Self Assessment tax return.

Where can I get a R40 form?

Basically, the R40 form is to be downloaded online. You can use the official online R40 form that we propose on our website as many times as you wish, download it and then print it. However, if you are not familiar with using a computer, you should call the HMRC services, and request that they send you a copy home by post.

Here is the HMRC number to reach in order to request your R40 form: 0300 200 3300.

How to complete a R40 form?

First of all, note that you have to fill a different online R40 form for every tax year. Non-UK residents should refer to the R43 form, which is dedicated to them. When filling in your R40 form, don't forget to:

  • Use black ink and write in capital letters
  • Cross out any unexpected mistake and write the correct information just below
  • Leave blank any section that does not concern you
  • Write inside the boxes

Always double-check that the figures you report are accurate. Any mistake could invalidate your R40 claim.

Here is the information that will have to complete throughout the R40 form:
