Our review on Marmalade car insurance policy

Marmalade Insurance is a specialist insurance company focused on providing insurance for young and learner drivers.

They are underwritten by Ageas and Highway Insurance which are some of the leading insurers in the UK who are well experienced in providing insurance for the mentioned target market.

Unfortunately, they do not mention the availability of optional extra covers on their website so we would advise you to enquire about that before signing up with them. Otherwise, due the high customer satisfaction rate on Trust Pilot and the covers they offer, we would highly recommend that you consider them when shopping for car insurance.

If the incident caused was not your fault and Marmalade Insurance was able to recover all costs from the responsible party, your NCB will not be affected. However, if they’re not able to recover the costs of the incident, your NCB will be affected.

Claims on the following will not affect your NCB:

  • Windscreen cover
  • Medical emergency cover
  • Incidents caused by an uninsured driver.

At Marmalade, you can apply for the NCB protection. The NCB protection allows you to make a certain number of claims within a period without losing your No-Claim bonus.

NCB protection claims (number per year): 2 claim in 5 years.

Good to know

A No-Claim bonus is a reward that you get from driving during a long time (at least one year) without making any claim. The more years you drive without claims, the higher your NCB rate gets hence the higher the discount on your insurance premium.

Other car insurance policies available at Marmalade

Marmalade black-box insurance

Marmalde Insurance offers Black Box Insurance that covers drivers aged 17 to 30. The company does not impose any mileage restrictions or curfews on their customers.

The black box uses telematics to analyse driving habits such as speed, braking, cornering and acceleration and creates a report which determines the price of the premium you’ll be charged during renewals. The better your driving score is, the lower prices you’ll get on your premium.

Marmalade learner driver car insurance

Marmalade offers Learner Driver cover for learner drivers between the age of 17 and 34.

They offer Short Term Learner Driver Cover as well as Annual Learner Driver Covers. The Learner Driver Cover is available across 5 levels of options: 30 days, 60 days, 180 days, and 1 year with the option to renew for a week or two at a time.

The cover poses no threat to the car owner’s No Claims Discount. It is meant to be a short term cover that is to be used alongside the car’s main insurance cover. It covers the following:

  • Legal liability
  • Personal Injury of up to £2,500
  • Medical expenses of up to £250
  • Personal belongings up to £100.

Marmalade business car insurance

Business Use Cover is included for social and domestic travel including commuting to and from work. For your own peace of mind, we would advise you to refer to your Certificate of Motor Insurance to ensure that this is included.

How to cancel your car insurance at Marmalade?

You can always cancel your car insurance policy at any time. However, some fees may apply especially if you cancel it after the 14 cooling-off period after your contract's anniversary date.

Since car insurance is a legal requirement, Marmalade as well as other insurers will renew your policy automatically at the end of the policy period without any notification from your side. However, Marmalade has the obligation to send you a renewal notice within 7 to 21 days before your contract comes to an end. You will therefore have 14 days - the cooling off period - to cancel your policy at reduced cancellation fees.

For the same reason, if you cancel your car insurance policy, you must sign up to a new one immediately. Find out more on car insurance legal requirement.

You would need to have various documents ready such as:

  • your policy number (right hand corner of your documents);
  • your bank details; and
  • your payment method in case there are cancellation fees.

Watch out!

Marmalade could also refuse to cover your car any longer if you don't pay for your premiums within the time allocated, or if they find out that you omitted important information that was required by the company such as your driving experience or you if have committed a fraud of any kind. This act is known as ‘fronting’.
